DYE DESIGNS GROUP COMPLETES BUNKER RENOVATION PROJECT AT THE CLUB AT INVERNESS

Reducing the number and size of bunkers restores design intent, improves playability and reduces maintenance costs at Denver-area golf course

(DENVER) – Dye Designs Group (DDG), a proud contributor to the Dye family’s legacy of golf course architecture for over 30 years, has completed a comprehensive renovation of all fairway and greenside bunkers at The Club at Inverness in Englewood, Colorado.

The 10-week project was led by Cynthia Dye McGarey, DDG’s principal architect, and her son Matt McGarey, senior design associate at the Denver-based firm.

“The bunkers at The Club at Inverness were in dire need of renovation,” said Cythina Dye McGarey, a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) since 2012. “Over the years, sand spatter deposition had become a significant problem in virtually all bunkers, while some had expanded to the point of reaching the tree line. Many also had rims that were eroding and contaminating what little sand remained.”

All 73 bunkers at the 18-hole Press Maxwell Golf Course, which opened in 1974, were reviewed for structural stability, aesthetics, sand quality and design intent. This review resulted in many bunkers being significantly reduced in size. An additional eight were eliminated entirely. The remaining 65 bunkers were upgraded by adding new sand and installing the Better Billy Bunker System.

“One of our main goals was to recreate the design intent of each bunker as efficiently as possible,” said Matt McGarey, who was on site daily to oversee contractor Total Turf Golf Services of Fraser, Colorado. “To do this, we used the extra soil that had accumulated in front of each bunker as fill material. This approach allowed us to avoid any costs associated with importing or exporting material from the site.”

The new, smaller green bunkers are now aligned with the respective putting areas. This not only provides a more attractive visual experience, but also increases the playable grass area. The grass conditions are also improved, as the increased access for players to the greens reduces wear and tear on the previously narrow areas.

The project is expected to reduce bunker maintenance costs by approximately 50% and bring major benefits to club members by restoring shot ratings and overall playability.

“Initial feedback from our members on the bunker renovation has been extremely positive,” said Dave Steinmetz, Director of Golf at The Club at Inverness. “It has been a pleasure working with Cynthia, Matt and the entire team at Dye Designs Group. They are true experts and we look forward to potential future opportunities to work with them to further enhance the golf experience at Inverness.”
