Ricki Lake, Pauly Shore and other stars mourn Richard Simmons’ death

Richard Simmons is honored by various celebrities after his death.

The fitness guru died one day after his 76th birthday, his longtime press agent Tom Estey confirmed to PEOPLE on Saturday, July 13. “The world has truly lost an angel,” he said of Simmons.

Simmons died in his Los Angeles home, TMZ reported, saying no foul play was suspected. The newspaper added that authorities responded to a call from a housekeeper around 10 a.m. local time.

In a series of social media posts, many paid tribute to Simmons, remembering him and his larger-than-life personality.

“The loss of this very special person breaks my heart,” Ricki Lake wrote in a Tribute shared on Xformerly Twitter. “May he rest in peace. #richardsimmons I loved him so much.”

The actress attached an old photo to her post in which she posed with Simmons and Maria Menounos.

In another tribute to X, Whose line is it anywayGreg Proops remembered the star who appeared on the show in June 2003.

“Richard Simmons was a lovely man. Friendly and funny. Probably our most popular guest,” he wrote.

Pauly Shore also remembered the late star with his own social media post. Next to a photo of the star, he wrote: “I just learned, like everyone else, that the wonderful Richard Simmons has passed away.”

“I hope you rest in peace and sparkle in the sky. Please give my mom Mitzi and dad Sammy a hug and kiss,” he added. “You are one of a kind, Richard. An incredible life. An incredible story. They broke the dolphin shorts when they made you. Rest in peace, my friend. Rest in peace.”

Gloria Gaynor, for her part, began her own post: “My thoughts are with Richard Simmons’ family and loved ones.

“With his unstoppable drive to make a positive difference in people’s lives, he has brought so much joy, happiness and life-changing moments to so many,” she continued.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Lenny Simmons also remembered his brother after his death.

“I don’t want people to be sad about my brother. I want them to remember him because he brought real joy and love into people’s lives,” he said. “He really cared about people. He called, wrote and emailed thousands of people throughout his career to offer them help.”

“So don’t be sad. Celebrate his life. He was very excited about all the upcoming projects he was working on,” the Simmons siblings continued.

He added: “We are in shock. Please respect the family during this difficult time.”
