As former President Donald Trump was speaking at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, loud bangs reminiscent of gunshots were heard, prompting his Secret Service troops to immediately spring into action and escort him off the stage.

The former president ducked as shots rang out less than 10 minutes into his speech, setting off screams from the crowd as his supporters gathered in the western part of the state on a sweltering Saturday.

Trump, whose head appeared to be bleeding, raised his fist in the air and appeared to shout “Fight!” as he was dragged off the stage and into a black vehicle.

Republican Rep. Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania was at the rally and told Fox News he heard about eight to 10 shots.

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, said the former president was doing “well.”

“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” the statement said. “He is doing well and is being evaluated at a local medical facility. Further details to follow.”

President Joe Biden has received an initial briefing on the incident, the White House said in a statement.
