In the middle of Carnival? Keep an eye on the weather

The lively rhythms of Carnival music now in the air surround us and the colorful costumes that will swing through the streets on Monday and Tuesday. The fleeting glimpses of these events currently demand our attention, but should not lead us to relax our vigilance in preparing for bad weather during the holidays.

We urge the people of Saint Lucia to remember that while Carnival celebrations bring joy and unity, the event also coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially began on June 1 and runs through the end of November.

Here are some important points to note for carnival organizers, revelers and visitors to the event:

Hurricane Awareness: Please be aware of the potential danger of hurricanes, storms or heavy rain during Carnival. These powerful natural products can disrupt festivities, cause damage and pose risks to life and property. It is important to stay informed of weather reports and heed official warnings.

Regarding the preparatory measures:

Emergency kit: At the same time as preparing your carnival costumes, put together an emergency kit. Pack essential items such as non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries and important documents.

Secure your property: Before the party begins, secure loose items, trim trees, and reinforce windows and doors. Unsecured items can become dangerous projectiles in high winds. You want to return to a safe home after your fun.

Know your evacuation routes: Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and shelters. If authorities issue evacuation orders, follow them immediately.

Communication plan: Discuss communication plans with family and friends. Make sure everyone knows how to reach each other in case there is a separation during the festivities. This means making sure everyone’s phones are fully charged before leaving the house.

Stay informed: Follow local news, radio and official government channels for up-to-date weather reports and alerts.

Follow the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) on social media for real-time information.

Sign up for emergency alerts via SMS or app.

Safety tips for Carnival:

Hydration: While dancing, circling, partying and having fun, we remind you to stay hydrated. Dehydration can worsen the effects of extreme weather conditions.

Avoid flooded areas: Heavy rains associated with hurricanes or storms can cause flooding. Avoid flooded roads and low-lying areas.

Temporary structures: When attending outdoor events, such as street parades, we ask that you be careful around temporary structures (stages, tents, chairs, banners, etc.) High winds can cause them to collapse or turn them into destructive projectiles.

Emergency contacts: Save emergency numbers in your phone. These include NEMO, local police and medical services.

Responsibility for the community:

Look out for others: During Carnival celebrations, check on your neighbors, especially the elderly or vulnerable, and offer your help if needed.

Report hazards: If you notice hazards (fallen trees, downed power lines, etc.), report them to the authorities immediately.

Remember, safety should always be our top priority, so let’s keep an eye on the weather as we celebrate Carnival. By staying informed and prepared, we can ensure a memorable and safe Carnival for all Saint Lucians.

We must never forget the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryle a few days ago in Carriacou (Grenada) and Saint Vincent (Union Island). Any severe weather phenomenon can seriously affect our lives. We are already a vulnerable people, so let’s not make things worse by being unprepared. Let’s prepare ourselves to reduce the negative consequences of severe weather.
