Trainer Joe Gallagher has sounded out the rematch between Katie Taylor and Tasha Jonas

Trainer Joe Gallagher enquired about Katie Taylor’s availability to fight Natasha Jonas after the Irish star’s fight against Amanda Serrano was postponed.

Taylor-Serrano was originally scheduled to take place on July 20 as part of the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul program, but after Tyson became ill the date was postponed to November and Gallagher inquired if Taylor wanted a fight in the meantime.

“Brian (Peters, Taylor’s manager) was asked, ‘In the meantime, would you like to have Katie and Tasha perform at the Co-op (arena) in Manchester in August? If that’s what you want, we would do it.’ And the point was that it was a chance for (undisputed junior welterweight) Katie to become a three-weight world champion, or that Tasha, if she were to come down, would have a chance to become a three-weight world champion.”

Liverpool IBF welterweight champion Jonas is 15-2-1 (9 KOs) and narrowly lost on points to Taylor in 2021.

“I think with how close the fight was last time, it’s not a guaranteed win for Katie and I’m sure with the money she’s getting for Serrano, like anything when you hit the jackpot in the lottery, you don’t want to mess it up. So Natasha was a big risk and most likely a low reward for her, especially with Serrano next,” added Gallagher.

Jonas has said she will likely retire from professional boxing this year, but things aren’t going according to plan. She won a close split decision over Mikaela Mayer in January and had planned to box twice more this year, but now in July, nothing has been planned since then.

“The plan was January and then May/June and then a fight in the fall and then retirement,” Gallagher explained.

“The fight in the summer obviously didn’t happen, that’s not really good for someone Tasha’s age. She has to stay busy and as you saw the year before when she won Boxer of the Year, she was busy, active and you saw her best performances. The Mikaela Mayer fight (rematch) was scheduled but for some reason it fell apart at the end but we all agreed.

“Of course Jessica McCaskill, that was another fight that was agreed and decided but then McCaskill was assigned to another opponent (Lauren Price) which disappointed us, so Natasha now… Katie Taylor is fighting Serrano, Natasha will most likely have a fight now in September/October and as I’ve always said, I would love to see Katie Taylor and Natasha Jonas have the last dance together, Christmas or St. Patrick’s next year. I just think the two that started in 2012 (at the Olympics), I would love to see them finish together.”
