Black star fades in Wimbledon

Black star fades in Wimbledon

The courageous Jasmine Paolini lost the women’s singles final at Wimbledon today with 6:2, 2:6, 6:4. Paolini, who was born in Italy and has Ghanaian roots, lost to the experienced Czech Barbora Krejcikova in a classic final full of first-class action and drama.

“We love you, Jasmine,” the crowd chanted before giving the Italian a standing ovation after her phenomenal run at the All England Club.

Paolini was aiming for her first Grand Slam trophy after losing in the final of the French Open a few weeks ago.

Paolini’s parents are Igo Paolini and Jacqueline Gardiner. Her father is of Italian descent while her mother is of Ghanaian and Polish descent.

Paolini said after the game: “The last two months have been crazy for me. I want to thank my team and my family. They always support me and without them I wouldn’t be here. The crowd was incredible. I got a lot of support. It’s just incredible to feel their love, I’m enjoying it so much.”

“Today I’m a little sad. I’m trying to keep smiling because I can’t forget that today is still a good day. I made it to the final of Wimbledon. I remember watching the final as a child and cheering for Federer. It was two wonderful weeks and I want to thank everyone who made it possible. The ball boys, the LTA. I’m going to forget someone, but please don’t be mad at me.”

When the rankings are updated on Monday, Paolini will rise from seventh to fifth in the world rankings, his highest ranking of his career so far.
