Strengthening the love of music in the Aegean

Strengthening the love of music in the Aegean

More than 6,000 children on the Aegean islands have participated in the free music workshops of the Association “Friends of the Greek Island and Sea” since the mid-1990s until today. Kathimerini visited their annual festival MuSifanto on Sifnos and witnessed the Association’s inspiring efforts to bring appreciation for music, art and culture in general to even the most remote islands. The Association’s founding members include prominent Greek artists and writers – Iakovos Kambanellis, Titos Patrikios, Anna Synodinou, Elli Solomonidou-Balanou and Panayiotis Tetsis. Its goals have been and continue to be the study, preservation and promotion of the uniqueness of the Greek island environment and traditional cultural heritage. It also seeks to promote a soft form of growth that helps islanders to remain in their place of residence without tourism being the only source of employment and, above all, to create opportunities for learning, communication and the development of the talents of children and young people on remote islands.
