The Driver TV series you forgot was on will not be happening. The live-action series was announced back in 2021 and was originally slated to launch in 2022 alongside a gamer-focused streaming service called Binge, but was scrapped along with the production company behind it.
Perhaps more importantly, the Driver series itself may not be dead yet, as a Ubisoft spokesperson said they are “actively working on other exciting projects related to the franchise.”
The cancellation of the series was discovered by Game File. This is hardly a surprise. Although it was announced in 2021, it was never publicly revealed that a writer, director, or star was attached to the planned show.
Binge, on the other hand, was a streaming startup aimed at gamers that never really got off the ground. It was co-founded by someone who unironically lists his role on LinkedIn as “Disrupting Tomorrow,” and the Binge account was posting about Web3 and “Watch-To-Earn” just three months ago.
There hasn’t been a video game in the series since Driver: San Francisco in 2011. It is one of the this Seven out of Ten: You once again take control of racer-turned-cop Tanner, only now he’s in a coma and has the ability to magically take over drivers of various vehicles in an open-world city. It’s got light and frothy mission design, plenty of character conveyed via NPC dialogue, and the floating coma man is a better solution to the driver’s literal and figurative design dead ends than letting Tanner walk.
Does “actively working on other exciting projects” mean Ubisoft is making a Driver video game? No. (Does Ubisoft’s actively working on a video game mean they’ll ever release it? Also no.) For all I know, they could make a pair of sneakers that say “Driver” on the side. But it would be better than nothing if they did — and probably better than anything Binge.com has produced.
