Jordan calls for global action after Israeli attack on refugee camp in Gaza Strip

Amman, Jordan

Jordan on Saturday condemned Israel’s attack on camps for displaced people in the Khan Younis region of the southern Gaza Strip and called for urgent and effective international action to protect Palestinians.

In a statement following the Israeli attack on Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry “strongly condemned Israel’s ongoing brutal aggression against the Gaza Strip and its systematic attacks on civilians and shelters for displaced people.”

It was stressed that “the international community must act promptly and effectively and provide international protection to the Palestinian people”.

On Saturday, Israel attacked the tents of displaced people in the Al-Mawasi region. According to official Palestinian sources, over 70 people were killed and almost 300 others injured.

The Israeli military said its attack on the Al-Mawasi area west of Khan Younis targeted senior figures of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. Hamas denied the Israeli claims.

Israel is ignoring a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and is facing international criticism for its ongoing brutal offensive on Gaza since the Palestinian Hamas attack on October 7.

According to local health authorities, more than 38,000 Palestinians have been killed since then, mostly women and children, and over 88,000 injured.

More than nine months after the start of Israel’s war, large parts of the Gaza Strip lie in ruins and are plagued by a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.

Israel is accused of genocide by the International Court of Justice. In its latest ruling, Israel was ordered to immediately cease its military operation in the southern city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians had sought refuge from the war before the May 6 invasion.
