Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love gives update on contract extension talks

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love will (hopefully) be the franchise’s starting quarterback for a long, long time. Despite concerns about his abilities ahead of the 2023 NFL season, Love overcame all obstacles and finished his first starting season with a 64.2% completion percentage, 4,159 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 96.1 passer rating.

It was the best season by a first-year starting quarterback in franchise history. He was also the first quarterback in NFL history to have such numbers before his third year as a starter.

Not only did Love give millions of Packers fans hope for the future of their favorite NFL franchise, he also secured himself a nice payday. Before the 2023 season, the Packers and Love agreed to a two-year contract that gave him a raise as starting quarterback and bought out his fifth-year option.

Finishing the season as one of the NFL’s top 10 quarterbacks would have given Love the opportunity to sign the largest contract in franchise history, but that has not happened yet.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love could earn $60 million a year

Entering the offseason, many thought Love would get a contract extension that would pay him about $46 million per year. However, two other NFL quarterbacks signed contract extensions that led many to believe he could become the first quarterback to make $60 million per year.

First, the Detroit Lions gave Jared Goff a four-year contract extension that pays him $53 million per season. The deal made him the second-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL (measured by annual compensation) behind Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals ($55 million).

Second, the Jacksonville Jaguars gave Trevor Lawrence a massive contract extension worth $55 million per year. With this extension, Burrow is the highest-earning player in the NFL each year.

The fact is that Love was better than Lawrence last year and should earn more:

In fact, Lawrence has never thrown as many touchdowns in a season as Love did last year, nor does he have as high a passer rating as Love in 2023.

Love recently did an “Ask Me Anything” video interview with Bleacher Report. During the segment, he was asked what a contract extension with the Packers would mean to him.

He replied: “That would mean a lot to me. That would be great. You know, signing a contract extension with the team that drafted you is, in my opinion, every player’s dream. To be able to stay in the same situation, on the same team, in the organization that believed in you from day one.

“So I’m definitely looking forward to it. Hopefully that happens in the future, but I’m very excited about the upcoming season and what’s in store for our team and if we can build something long-term here in Green Bay.”

It sounds like negotiations are still ongoing, but Love definitely wants his future to be with the Packers.

After seeing what he did last year, Green Bay undoubtedly wants that too.
