Tech News: Meta owns instant messaging platform WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will automatically convert voice notes into text. The Indian Express reported that the new feature will allow users to edit voice notes with ease.

It was revealed that the platform has already started rolling out the feature to some of its beta users.

WABetaInfo reported that the feature is available with the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.15.5 and the version is currently available for download on the Google Play Store.

Voice note transcription is planned to be enabled for both incoming and outgoing voice messages. Users will have to download an additional package and transcription will only be done on the device itself, meaning only the user of the device will be able to access the transcribed message. The feature is currently available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Hindi and plans to make it available in more languages in the future.

The Indian Express reports that the ‘Do not transcribe voice’ feature will be useful in a noisy environment without headphones or when the user does not want to play the message in front of others. The feature also comes in handy for long voice messages. Moreover, since the voice note is converted, users can search through these messages.

WhatsApp has received a number of new features in the last few weeks, including several new features such as Meta AI, a ChatGPT-like conversational chatbot. It has been revealed that the platform is working on some new AI features such as Imagine Me, which can create AI versions of users.
