After “Austin,” country singer Dasha is back with a “Perfect Storm” of a summer song

Following the success of her country-pop hit “Austin,” Dasha is optimistic about the future of her music career. Still, the singer-songwriter can’t resist a touch of nostalgia, especially when it comes to love.

On Friday, Dasha unveiled a music video for her new song “Didn’t I,” which sees her reconnecting with a former boyfriend at a drive-in movie theater while two of her distraught friends look on. How long the rekindled flame will last is anyone’s guess, but for now, they’re content enjoying each other’s company and dancing.

In an interview with HuffPost, Dasha described “Didn’t I” as a musical sequel to “Austin,” an ode to a lover who couldn’t commit.

“I’m the princess of the relapse community. I’m just so nostalgic,” she explained. “There’s something about my past that really fascinates me, including the men in my past. It’s like admitting, ‘Oops! There I go again. My mistake.’ There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just… not the best choice to move on from.”

Dasha says the songwriting process was also a kind of “perfect storm.” She and fellow musicians Ben Johnson and Emily Weisband were holed up in a recording studio outside Nashville when they learned that a tornado warning had been issued.

“So we had 45 minutes to write and record a song,” she said.

“Didn’t I” is Dasha’s first new release since signing with Warner Records in March. The track will be featured on an expanded edition of her second album, “What Happens Now?”, due out later this year.

The California native has spent her summer riding the height of the success of “Austin,” which was hailed by The New York Times as “one of the most distinctive country songs of this year.” Earlier this month, the song peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which lists the 100 most popular songs in the United States.

Thanks to an easy-to-follow line dance, “Austin” became a hit on TikTok in January. It also made Dasha famous, and she performed the song on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and the CMT Music Awards. Next month, she’ll kick off her first headlining tour, “Dashville, USA,” with three dates in Europe before touring the U.S. in the fall.

Speaking to HuffPost in March, Dasha said she was grateful for the huge success of “Austin” given the general rarity of female artists on the country charts.

“Country is a very male-dominated world, but I honestly see it as a completely open path and a really exciting opportunity rather than a challenge.”
