Kevin Costner was not alone, Taylor Sheridan also wanted to bring another star into his Yellowstone world

While the show continued to captivate audiences, this newcomer seemed to be the missing piece of the Yellowstone Puzzle that makes the series a TV titan. It was none other than Cole Hauser.

With its gritty western drama and an all-star cast, Taylor Sheridan’s 2018 drama series Yellowstone has amassed a huge fan base. While Kevin Costner’s (our beloved John Dutton) performance is undeniably iconic, Sheridan knew that another horseman could benefit the ranch’s success. But who was this new star that Sheridan was so adamant about bringing into the fold? Yellowstone World? Cole Hauser (or should we say Rip Wheeler?)

Unlike John Dutton, where Costner was the obvious choice, casting Rip wasn’t so easy. However, Sheridan bypassed all the formality of the audition process, telling Deadline:

I knew I wanted him from the beginning. He didn’t audition. I wanted him from day one. I watched some of the stuff he’s done. There’s no subtext with the guy and I really liked that.

According to Sheridan, Hauser wears his emotions openly, and that is exactly what he wanted for Rip’s character. In addition, Hauser’s performance in films such as Pitch black And Tears of the Sun made the Yellowstone The author saw something special in him, even though those films seemed far removed from the dusty plains of Montana. Sheridan said of the actor (via Cheat Sheet):

Those (films) stuck with me and he has that Midwestern roughness that you know right away you don’t want to mess with him. And with Rip, that has to be clear from the start.

Taylor Sheridan envisioned Rip as a character with Midwestern grit and a piercing gaze that fit the bill perfectly. But there were some hurdles. Convincing Cole Hauser to join was no picnic. Thankfully, Sheridan’s persuasion paid off and Hauser added another layer of complexity (and believability) to the film. Yellowstone World.

Naturally, Yellowstone wouldn’t be the same without Costner. Sheridan confirmed this and even hinted that Costner might direct an episode one day (though that could be a big challenge due to the busy shooting schedule), according to Deadline. With Yellowstone By the end of the film, one thing is certain: Sheridan’s instinct for casting Costner and Hauser was spot on.
