Pinstripe Pulse

At 51-26, the Yankees have the most wins in the major leagues and are a half-game ahead of Baltimore atop the American League East. Aaron Judge, who leads MLB in a number of individual categories, hit his 27th home run in Thursday’s game against the Orioles, which ties the MLB for the most. Giancarlo Stanton has a .375 batting average with three home runs during an eight-game hitting streak. Ben Rice has a pair of hits in three games since being promoted from the minor leagues following Anthony Rizzo’s arm injury. Tim Hill made his Yankees debut yesterday and worked out of the bullpen shortly after signing with the team. The 34-year-old Hill, brought in to give the Yanks some more pitching depth after Ian Hamilton and Cody Poteet were placed on the injured list, played 27 times for the White Sox this season before being designated for a position change and released. He had also pitched for Kansas City and San Diego earlier in his career.

How about that

Patience has always been a virtue for Juan Soto at the plate! On Thursday, he made the 700th walk of his career, in his 853rd career game. This makes him the fourth fastest player to reach this mark. The only ones who were faster were the legendary Ted Williams (775), Max Bishop of the Philadelphia A’s in the mid-1920s (795) and one of the best baseball hitters of the 90s and early 2000s, Hall of Famer Frank Thomas (836).

Know the enemy

After winning six of their last seven games, the Braves have a 41-31 record at the end of June to comfortably clinch the National League’s first wild card playoff spot, even though Atlanta is seven games behind the NL East-leading Phillies. Marcell Ozuna has a .316 batting average with 20 home runs and 63 RBIs, the most in the NL. Ozuna is also the league’s third-best player in average behind Jurickson Profar and Shohei Ohtani and second in home runs, one behind Ohtani. Matt Olson is the only other Braves player with double-digit home runs, with 11. Austin Riley has a .526 batting average with three home runs in his last six games. Jarred Kelenic comes to the Bronx with a seven-game hitting streak. Closer Raisel Iglesias has converted each of his last 11 save opportunities and 19 of 21 this year. Atlanta is playing without reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. after he tore his left ACL in late May. Other injured Braves include another outfielder, Michael Harris Jr., and Spencer Strider, who has won 20 games.

Probable pitchers

Carlos Rodón will take the ball tonight in the series opener, when he plays alongside Chris Sale, who is 9-2 with a 2.98 ERA in his first season with Atlanta after being traded there from the Red Sox in December. Marcus Stroman will be called up tomorrow, while the Braves counter with Charlie Morton. With a 3.91 ERA, the 40-year-old Morton is the third-oldest player in MLB behind Justin Verlander and a player who has not played in the major leagues this season due to injury, Joey Votto. Nestor Cortes and Max Fried will start Sunday.

A new partnership

YES and Willow by Cricbuzz, which offers more live, streaming and on-demand cricket than any other sports service, have partnered to broadcast seven matches featuring reigning Major League Cricket champions MI New York in the upcoming MLC season. These matches will be available on both YES and the YES app, as well as Willow by Cricbuzz’s TV network and streaming platform, starting with the season opener on Friday 5 July, which will see MI New York take on 2023 runners-up Seattle Orcas. Led by elite West Indian batsman Kieron Pollard, MI New York is gearing up to defend its maiden title.
