Her candid demeanor and straightforward advice have helped make her a household name in the pillow talk world—and a star in her own right.

Dr. Ruth’s death at her home in New York was announced by her spokesman Pierre Lehu, according to the New York Times.

Westheimer was in her 50s when she began her career in the 1980s by answering mailed questions about sex and relationships on the radio.

She is the author of several guides on health and sexuality, addressing topics that most other doctors still do not talk openly about.

Dr. Ruth previously wrote a regular column in Playgirl magazine and even lent her well-known brand to an educational board game and a computer game.

College students admired her – when she accepted an invitation to campus, it was often one of the biggest events of the year.

Her face soon began appearing in commercials and cameo appearances in popular television shows and films.

She had a well-known small role in the 1985 French film One Woman or Two, starring Gérard Depardieu and Sigourney Weaver, which was released in the United States in 1987.

Dr. Ruth’s fame was rooted in her approach to therapy and her understanding of sex and relationships.
