JUG

breed

Dylan stops, San Diego Padres Comparisons Atlanta Braves ($10,200) – I’m looking for strikeout upside in each of my pitching picks today. Cease has the fourth-highest K/9 in MLB this season, along with a 7-8 record, 4.21 ERA and 3.39 FIP. He’s allowed at least three runs in four of his last five starts, but there are still signs he can play strong on Saturday. His strikeouts can help offset runs allowed, and he has at least eight strikeouts in three of his last four games, including 10 strikeouts against Milwaukee a few weeks ago. He’s also been much better at home at Petco Park than he has on the road, posting at least 17 DKFP in each of his last seven home games. Last week against Arizona in his last game, he allowed three runs in seven innings but still had 22.2 DKFP as he had eight strikeouts. He was even better in his previous home game, shutting out the Nationals and posting 36 DKFP in one of his best games of the year. He has that potential even in a tough matchup against the Braves. Atlanta’s offense has plenty of power but has been hampered by injuries and is middle of the pack in most stats over the past 30 days. They are in the top 10 in K% over that time frame, though, so Cease has good strikeout potential on Saturday night.

Value

Hayden Birdsong, San Francisco Giants Comparisons Minnesota Twins ($6,300) – From one end of the salary structure to the other, Birdsong is the cheapest starting pitcher on the board, but has good strikeout potential. The 22-year-old entered the top 100 of the MLB Pipeline at the start of the season and ranked fourth in the Giants’ system. He totaled 149 strikeouts in 100 23 innings last season in several levels in the minors and went 5-2 with 75 strikeouts in 57 13 innings this year before being called up for his MLB debut on June 26. He has a 4.40 ERA, a 5.26 FIP and 15 strikeouts in 14 13 innings in his three major league starts, but he has the potential for more strikeouts as he continues to grow and adapt to the major leagues. At just over $6,000, he has the strikeout potential to provide excellent value against the Twins, who rank in the top 10 in K% over the last 30 days. Building Birdsong as your SP2 leaves enough salary left over to stack the best hitters in your order as well.

INFIELD

breed

Christian Walker, Arizona Diamondbacks Comparisons Toronto Blue Jays ($5,200) – With the recent struggles of Jose Berrios ($8,300)especially on the road, the Dbacks are a lineup to definitely attack on Saturday night. Walker has been one of the best hitters in baseball lately. In his last 13 games, Walker has averaged 12.8 DKFP per game while batting .360 (18-for-50) with four doubles, five home runs and a wOBA of .490. The 33-year-old typically hits in the heart of the batting order and has already hit 22 home runs and 66 RBIs this season. His wOBA of .367 would be a new career high for a full season, and he brings plenty of power potential to Saturday’s lineup.

breed

Cal Raleigh, Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels ($4,700) – Raleigh is one of the best hitters available behind the plate, and the position scarcity makes him even more valuable this Saturday night. The switch-hitting catcher has just a .218 batting average this season, but has already hit 20 home runs for the third year in a row. Raleigh has multiple hits in five of his last seven games and has batted 12-for-29 (.414) with five home runs and a double in that short span. His .592 wOBA in those games has boosted his season stats to .320, enough to make him one of the best hitters in baseball. Filling your catcher spot with Raleigh keeps your potential high, especially in his matchup with Jose Soriano ($7,100)who has allowed seven runs in nine innings since returning from the IL.

Value

Geraldo Perdomo, Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Toronto Blue Jays ($3,200) – Perdomo is already in his third full season in the MLB, so it’s easy to forget that he’s only 24 and still has a lot of room to grow. He’s taken the next step at bat this season, improving from his .246 batting average last season to .287 this year. He hasn’t hit a home run yet this year, so his .305 wOBA isn’t all that impressive, but as a cheap player at barely over $3,000, he brings good contact-based potential to the table Saturday night against Berrios. He’s struck out safely in 10 of his last 13 games, hitting 15-of-47 (.319) with three doubles, a triple and a stolen base. He’s also hit six hard-hit balls in his last three games, according to Statcast, so he’s not just thriving on weak contact, either.

Value

Leo Jimenez, Toronto Blue Jays at Arizona Diamondbacks ($2,000) – Jimenez is an elite bargain for the minimum salary. Ranked as the No. 5 prospect in Toronto’s system by MLB Pipeline entering the season, the 23-year-old from Panama had a .271 batting average with seven home runs, three stolen bases and a .391 wOBA in his 57 games in Buffalo before being called up to make his MLB debut last week. He has played five games for the Jays, going 6-for-17 (.353) with a double, two walks, three runs scored and a .389 wOBA. In his five games with multiple at-bats, he has averaged 6.4 DKFP per game and twice reached double-digit DKFP. For just $2,000, he doesn’t have to do much to be a standout player per dollar.

OUTFIELD

breed

Julio Rodriguez, Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels ($5,200) – Rodriguez had three hits in each of the first two games of this series against the Angels, posting 13 and 22 DKFP. He also had four hits and 31 DKFP early in the M’s’ current road trip in San Diego, giving him a .625 batting average (10-of-16) and a .743 wOBA in his last four games. Rodriguez has shined in the All-Star Game in the past and is in top form during this year’s offseason, too. He has two stolen bases in his last 11 games, showing he still has good speed potential, although his power potential is also picking up after a slow start. He gets that good matchup against Soriano on Saturday and should be able to continue in Anaheim.

breed

Heliot Ramos, San Francisco Giants vs. Minnesota Twins ($4,600) – Not all talent is an instant success in the MLB, and Ramos is a great example of a player who struggled in his first round but looked much better in his second major league try. After batting just .179 last season, he’s batting an impressive .304 this season with 14 home runs and a .388 wOBA. He’s settled in at second or third in the order most nights and has become a key run producer in the Giants’ lineup. In his last 12 games, Ramos is batting 19-for-49 (.388) with four home runs and a .470 wOBA. That kind of performance under $5,000? I’m in!

Value

George Springer, Toronto Blue Jays at Arizona Diamondbacks ($3,900) – After batting just .188 with a .256 wOBA in his first 71 games this season, Springer has turned things around in his last 17 games, hitting a red-hot .386 (22-for-57) with five doubles, five home runs, a .515 wOBA, 12 runs scored and 19 RBIs. He posted 13 DKFP with two hits in the series opener and has scored over 12 DraftKings points in four of his last six games. Using him as a sub-$4,000 outfielder at the top of Toronto’s lineup is a good strategy, as plenty of runs should be scored at Chase Field.

Value

Jonatan Clase, Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels ($2,900) – I was a big believer in Clase when he got his chance with the Mariners this season. He hasn’t shown his full potential in the MLB yet, but he has tons of potential. In his 17 games this season with Seattle, he’s batted just .184 with one double and one stolen base, but in Triple-A, he’s batted .274 with 10 home runs, a .375 wOBA and an impressive 26 stolen bases in 59 games. Last year, Clase stole 79 bases and hit 20 home runs in 129 games in Single-A and Double-A, so he has the skills to score in a variety of ways at his best. On Friday night, he stole his third base of the season as a pinch runner and batted 1-for-4 in his only start since he was last called up. If he’s back in the lineup Saturday night, I’m very happy with his potential at this salary.
