Protect Michigan’s apple crop, destroy this beetle locally

There’s a new villain in Michigan that has nothing to do with the roads or the weather. It’s the spotted lanternfly, and this little invasive species is worth the fuss. This winged pest may look pretty at first glance, but it’s a real threat to the state’s agriculture, forests, and natural beauty.

I know, right? You wouldn’t know it by looking at them, but these otherwise beautiful bugs are targeting Michigan’s apple crop and your fall cider selfies. The Spotted Lanternfly (STF) has a voracious appetite for destruction, feeding on over 70 different plant species, including our most prized crops like grapes, hops, and apples. Yes, that means our most beloved Michigan wines, ciders, and beers are in danger. Do I have your attention yet?

The spread of the Spotted Lanternfly throughout the state is aided by the insect’s ability to lay its eggs on just about anything. Egg sacs have been found on firewood, patio furniture, and even cars, making this invasive species a stealthy hitchhiker and increasing its ability to spread like wildfire. You can inadvertently spread it throughout the state by bringing your patio furniture into your cabin up north.
