“Alias” remains a great TV series: FLASHBACK

“Alias” remains a great TV series: FLASHBACK

“Alias” remains one of the best television series of all time.

We’ve continued to produce posts featuring flashbacks to some great classic shows, and I found myself thinking that there was no way I could pass up the opportunity to spend some time talking about the ABC hit starring Jennifer Garner.

The series is a great reminder of what television can be at its best. For this reason and more, it’s time to take a walk down memory lane.

Here we go!

“Alias” was a great television series.

  • Cast: Jennifer Garner, Bradley Cooper, Ron Rifkin, Michael Vartan, Victor Garber and Carl Lumbly
  • Number of episodes: 105
  • Original premiere date: September 30, 2001
  • Original network: ABC
  • Streaming: Disney+ and available for purchase elsewhere.
  • Plot description via IMDB: Sydney Bristow is an international spy recruited straight out of college and trained in espionage and self-defense.

Alias is one of the first television shows I ever truly fell in love with, and yes, I had a huge crush on Sydney Bristow (Garner) as a little kid.

I thought the show was incredibly badass. The timing couldn’t have been better either, as it premiered just weeks after 9/11. The country was learning about the power of the American military and intelligence agencies, and the latter part of that is what “Alias” is about.

The series begins with Bristow being recruited out of college to work for a mysterious, covert organization called SD6, which she believes is a secret cell of the CIA.

In reality, SD6 is part of a huge criminal organization that works against the interests of the United States. After the death of her fiancé and an attempt on her own life, she learns the truth and becomes a double agent for the CIA.

From then on, viewers are taken from one crazy adventure to the next as Sydney learns the truth about her parents, main antagonist Arvin Sloane, and the man she falls in love with – CIA agent Michael Vaugh.

Bradley Cooper also had a solid role in the series before becoming a true A-list talent.

The later seasons of the series focus on a man named Milo Rambaldi, a Renaissance figure whose creations and works play a central role in the hunt for Sydney and Sloan.

This is where the series has some of its best moments, as it combines traditional spy drama with some sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal elements.

Another thing Alias did very well was show viewers that you can have a badass female lead without her coming across as preachy or wisecracking. Jennifer Garner kicked ass as Sydney Bristow. The character was an absolute savage and it’s a shame that in our current climate the writers decided to forgo that pattern.

If you want to reminisce and watch a show that is now over two decades old but is still great, give Alias a try. Have you seen it yet? Then let me know what you think at [email protected].
