News on the war in Russia and Ukraine: Putin’s forces lose 1,000 soldiers at the front within 24 hours, says Ukrainian military

Selenskyj: China is trying to undermine the Ukraine peace summit

Russian forces have lost 1,030 soldiers killed or wounded on the war front in Ukraine over the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian military said. The losses of Vladimir Putin’s troops include 48 artillery systems and 23 armored combat vehicles, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said.

According to Ukrainian estimates of Russia’s losses since the start of the large-scale invasion in February 2022, Moscow has lost at least 556,650 soldiers in death and injury on Ukrainian battlefields.

Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy had called on his NATO allies in Washington to lift restrictions on the use of long-range weapons against targets in Russia, arguing that this would be a “game changer” in the war with Moscow.

Andriy Yermak, Mr Zelensky’s cabinet chief, told a public forum that there were no restrictions on the use of weapons in Russia and that it would be “a real turning point” if Ukraine’s allies could lift all restrictions on the use of the weapons they supply to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Britain has told Mr Zelensky that Ukraine could use British-supplied missiles to attack targets inside Russia.

Ukraine receives tens of thousands of grenades every month

The Czech President announced that the Czech Republic will deliver tens of thousands of important pieces of ammunition to Ukraine every month until the end of the year.

Following the NATO summit in Washington, President Petr Pavel announced that 50,000 shells would be sent to Ukraine in July and August, and then between 80,000 and 100,000 every month from September until the end of 2024.

The grenade donation is part of a Czech Republic initiative aimed at delivering half a million rounds of ammunition by 2024.

The country has indicated that it could also find the grenades in unnamed third countries as long as its allies provide the necessary resources.

The plan is designed to make up for the ammunition deficit of the Ukrainian and Russian armed forces, caused by below-average European investment in defense and a seven-month delay, from October to April, of a U.S. military package while Congress was divided over how to allocate funds.

The Czech Republic says it can supply Ukraine with up to 1.5 million cartridges.

Fire in Russian oil depot as Russia

An oil depot in Russia’s southwestern Rostov region caught fire on Saturday after a Ukrainian drone started a fire in the early hours, local officials said, the latest long-range attack by Kyiv forces on a border region.

In recent months, Ukraine has increased its air strikes on Russian soil, targeting refineries and oil terminals in an effort to slow down the Kremlin’s war machine.

Moscow’s army is advancing with all its might along the front line in eastern Ukraine. In the third year of the war, the defenders there are vulnerable due to a lack of troops and ammunition.

Rostov Region Governor Vasily Golubev said a drone strike caused a fire covering an area of 200 square meters, but there were no casualties. About five hours after reporting the fire on Telegram, Golubev said the fire had been extinguished.

In addition to the two drones intercepted over the Rostov region, Russian air defense systems destroyed two drones over the country’s western regions of Kursk and Belgorod overnight, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.
