Tracy Cortes has come a long way since beginning her journey in the world of mixed martial arts. Cortez likes to invoke her Mexican heritage when she enters the arena for a fight. And what better way to do that than to step out and “Like the flower”a song that gives you goosebumps when Selena Y Los Dinos sings the melody? That was the song she chose when she defeated Vanessa Melo at UFC Fight Night 164. Yes! That was the first time Cortez entered the Octagon. Even in her last fight against Jasmine Jasudavicius at Noche UFC, Cortez repeated the trend of walking out to “Como la Flor” and defeating her opponents.

Cortez’s journey into the MMA world began with nothing but sadness when her brother passed on to the afterlife. It was her brother’s dream to become a fighter under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner. After her brother’s death, she began training with his friend. With memories of her deceased family in mind, Cortez fought bravely in her MMA debut fight in 2017. Unfortunately, she was unable to secure a win. But that was the only time she suffered a loss. But the Mexican-American mixed martial artist set combat sports fans’ hearts racing when she made a drastic move to make weight for her fight against Rose Namajunas. Let’s see what Cortez has done to compete at UFC Denver.

Crazy step to gain weight

Namajunas had previously competed against Maycee Barber. However, Barber had to withdraw due to her health problems. To save the card, Tracy Cortez stepped in and agreed to fight “Thug” at short notice. However, at the weigh-in, the Mexican-American fighter weighed just over 126 pounds. She quickly decided to cut her hair. To the surprise of MMA fans, the emergency haircut helped her maintain her weight.

Needless to say, this performance was met with much applause from the fight community. After the weigh-in ceremony, ESPN MMA’s popular MMA journalist Megan Olivi asked about the thoughts that went through the flyweight’s mind when she decided to take such a measure to make weight. Cortez responded: “Usually, I was ahead of schedule for my original fight and had to give it my all. What was it, 0.5 (pounds)? I thought to myself, ‘No hesitation. We’ll do whatever it takes.’ This is a big opportunity and it would be a shame to miss it by 0.5.”
