Over 50 dead in Israeli attack on al-Mawasi “security zone” in southern Gaza Strip | News on the Israel-Palestine conflict

DEVELOPMENT OF HISTORY,

Al-Mawasi, where thousands of displaced Palestinians have sought refuge, has been the target of several attacks since October.

More than 50 Palestinians were killed and many injured in Israeli military strikes on al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, medical sources told Al Jazeera.

The attack by Israeli warplanes on Saturday targeted tents housing displaced Palestinians and a water distillery in an area that the Israeli military has declared a “security zone,” according to a Gaza civil defense spokesman told Al Jazeera.

Images from the scene showed Palestinians trying to rescue people from under the rubble. Among the injured were children and paramedics.

Reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum said this was “a new massacre carried out by the Israeli military,” adding that the area was hit by “five bombs and five rockets.”

“The images from the attack area are incredibly bloody and devastating,” he said, adding that the victims had been taken to hospitals in Nasser and Kuwait.

The Gaza Strip Health Ministry said it could confirm that at least 20 Palestinians were killed and 90 injured and had been taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, some of them seriously injured.

An official at Nasser Hospital told Al Jazeera that more than 20 bodies and dozens of injured people had been brought to the hospital.

However, he stressed that medical teams did not have the capacity to accommodate additional injured people who were still being recovered from the bombing site by civil protection services.

The Gaza government media office also issued a statement saying that more than 100 people were killed or injured in the attack, including civil defense workers.
