Lightning strike hits Cape May City Hall

CAPE MAY – City Hall was closed Friday morning after it was struck by lightning during a storm that brought torrential rain and flooded many streets.

The extent of the damage is currently being assessed, the city said in a statement. The town hall is scheduled to reopen on Monday.

According to officials, no other municipal buildings were damaged and no injuries were reported throughout the city.

Cape May County was hit hard by the storm on Friday, with rainfall in the county ranging from 2 to over 4 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

In July 2021, a lightning strike paralyzed the city’s control center system.

There have been several power outages in Cape May since 1 p.m. Atlantic City Electric has teams in the area to make repairs, city officials said.

At the height of the storm, all of Cape May’s emergency services were activated, including fire, police, emergency management, fire department and public works services.

The storm brought the city’s flood pumps into action, but due to the heavy rainfall they were unable to handle the flooding, the city said.

Several traffic lights were not operating in their normal cycle, but the county road authority took care of it.

Due to lightning strikes in the region, the city’s beaches remain closed.
