It turns out there is no need to worry. According to a statement on the Recording Academy’s website, voting members are entrusted with the following tasks:

1. Choose and vote only in the areas and categories in which you work daily.

2. Cast your vote solely on the basis of the artistic and technical quality of the Eligible Product.

Who can become a voting member?

The Recording Academy’s voting membership is open to performers, songwriters, producers, engineers, instrumentalists and other creative professionals currently working in the recording industry.

This means that membership is not limited to singers; other people who contribute to the growth of the music industry can also be invited to join.

Nigerian non-singing celebrities who have become members of the Recording Academy over the years include Deola Jayesimi, Senior Label Manager (West Africa) at The Orchard, Kolapo Oladapo, lawyer and business and strategy manager at Apple (Platoon), Joey Akan, pop culture and music writer, journalist and podcaster, and Titi Adesanya, journalist and operations manager of EMPIRE Africa, among others.
