Chelsea confirmed the signing of Renato Veiga from FC Basel on Friday. The 20-year-old signed a seven-year contract with an option for a further year.

Veiga is the club’s sixth summer signing after Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman, Marc Guiu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Estevao Willian, who will join in 2025.

The Blues paid just €14 million for the Portuguese U20 international and he developed into the left-back the club wanted to strengthen in this transfer window.

Veiga can play at left-back, centre-back and in midfield, but Chelsea are believed to view him more as a left-back who can also move into midfield.

Enzo Maresca will assess Veiga during pre-season and then decide whether he belongs in the first team or needs to be loaned out for his further development.

Veiga is undoubtedly physically imposing and, along with Adarabioyo, addresses concerns about the team’s size that arose last season.

In his first interview as Blue Veiga, he was asked if he watched any Chelsea players growing up and he replied that he was a huge fan of N’Golo Kante, and let’s be honest, who isn’t?!
