After a week-long search, the bodies of two missing men from Elk Grove Village were found in Lake Michigan

HAMMOND, Ind. — Authorities have found the bodies of two men who went missing last week after they jumped from a boat during a gathering on Lake Michigan.

The bodies of the two men, identified as 45-year-old Eduardo Rivera Jr. and 32-year-old Salvador Lopez, both residents of Elk Grove Village, were recovered from Lake Michigan on Friday afternoon, a week after their disappearance, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Indiana State Conservation Officers began searching for the two men after they jumped from their boat during a gathering on the coast in northwest Indiana on Friday, July 5.

DNR officials said emergency crews responded to a 911 call around 2:40 p.m. Friday that two boaters were missing.

The two men were among twelve people on board the boat. Since no one on board knew how to operate the ship after their disappearance, they called 911 and fired flares.

Authorities later located the boat and its remaining nine passengers about 2.5 miles off the coast of Whiting, Indiana. They learned that a third man, wearing a life jacket, had also jumped from the boat to help the other two.

Multiple agencies began searching and the Coast Guard found the man, who was wearing a life jacket, at 4:30 p.m. that same day. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and later released.

Crews continued to search for the remaining two men, but strong winds and high waves hampered efforts.

The search lasted several days but was finally ended when the bodies of the two missing men were found on Friday.
