Trinity Market in Hull really has it all – but I went looking for something different this week.

Trinity Delicatessen is located in the center of the market and offers probably the cheapest takeaway food in the entire market.

The deli prides itself on supporting other independent businesses, with Hull Bakery supplying all the bread and pastries for the butties, sausage rolls and pies.

Every time I’ve walked past Trinity Delicatessen there’s been a line, and today was no exception.

The deli’s main dishes are more down-to-earth compared to its neighbours: sandwiches, baked potatoes, salad plates, snacks and drinks. Although you can pay by credit card, there is a minimum spend of £3 and cash is preferred. With this in mind, I ordered a sandwich with two fillings (£2.80 + an additional filling for 80p) and a drink to go well over that limit.

There were many options to fill you up: ham, beef, and lots of chicken options. Unfortunately, I was out of luck as the last of the pastrami had just gone, so I opted for ham and chicken. White buttered bread cake, mayo, no salad. That’s a good job.

Even at the really fair price of £3.60 – a little more than the price of a Tesco meal – they were generous with the amount of fillings. The cold cuts and meat were perfect for this warm weather as I savoured it in the new outdoor seating area in the bright sunshine. The meat combination was surprisingly good, although I regretted not having the honey chilli chicken. The ham gave it a bit of salt and the mayo seemed like a third filling.

Since it’s a fraction of the price of some lunch options – and just as tasty and filling – I won’t complain. If you want to eat at a food court but are on a budget, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better value sandwich in the city.

Trinity Delicatessen is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
