Former Major League All-Star impresses in his first outing with the Mariners system

After recently signing a contract with the Seattle Mariners, former All-Star relief pitcher Chris Devenski impressed in his first appearance with the organization Thursday night.

Pitching for Triple-A Tacoma, Devenski delivered a perfect eighth inning that included this strikeout, courtesy of @MiLBMariners:

Devenski was designated for assignment and released by the Tampa Bay Rays before the Mariners acquired him. Devenski, 33, has struggled this season, going 2-1 with a 6.75 ERA. He is a nine-year veteran of the Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels and Rays. He is 27-22 with a 3.98 ERA and won the World Series with the Astros in 2017, making the All-Star Game that same year.

The Mariners will have to make difficult decisions about what to do with their bullpen in the coming weeks. The team just signed Gregory Santos from the injured list and still needs to make room for Gabe Speier in the near future. If Seattle needs a spot for Devenski, those are two spots that could be up for grabs in the current group. Plus, Bryan Woo returns on Friday and will require a roster change.

The Mariners enter Friday night’s game with an overall record of 52-43 and in first place in the American League West. They face the Angels again on Friday with first pitch at 6:38 p.m. PT.

After an 11-0 win on Thursday, the M’s offense will look to keep scoring against left-hander Tyler Anderson. Anderson has had a good year for the Halos, going 8-8 with a 2.81 ERA. Bryan Woo will pitch for the Mariners.
