Moath al-Kahlout reported from Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip that families who had fled their homes in Gaza City before the Israeli ground offensive had arrived at an evacuation center in the refugee camp without food, water or belongings.

A displaced Palestinian mother named Zaman Abu Ouda said that when Israelis ordered the evacuation of Gaza city, they did not give people time to pack even the most basic things for survival.

“Or bring food to our young children,” she told Al Jazeera. “Everyone had only a few personal items. No food or drink. Nothing,” she said.

“It was very difficult. We walked down the street and saw shrapnel and scattered body parts,” she said.

Displaced Palestinian Yahya Abu Al Aoud said people had been assured they were in a safe area and did not need to be evacuated. But carpet bombing and heavy shooting began that night.

“It was extremely difficult. We left all our belongings behind,” said Al Aoud.

“Some have lost their children,” he said.

“They tried to return, were trapped and could not save their children or family members.”
