Famous comedian throws shade at McDavid

EDMONTON – They say laughter is the best medicine.

Maybe that’s true, if there was enough time to heal an emotional wound. For the Edmonton Oilers, the wound is still fresh after their loss in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

The 2024 ESPYS were awarded on July 11. It is an awards ceremony that honors the best players, teams and moments from across the sports world.

Connor McDavid took home the award as the best NHL player, marking the third year in a row that he has won the award.

Comedian Nikki Glaser presented the award for Best Male Athlete. Shohei Ohtani, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Mahomes and McDavid were all nominated for the honor.

Before Glaser presented the award, she took a playful dig at the Oilers and McDavid.

She spoke about the loss to the Florida Panthers and the next Stanley Cup that McDavid will lift: “What I’m saying is that nothing is going to stand in the way of these incredible athletes and their pursuit of greatness except the Florida Panthers. Boy, Connor, that must have hurt. Losing a hockey game to a place that doesn’t even have ice.”

“The only Stanley Cup Connor will hold for the time being is the one his wife lets him get out of the display case.”

A quiet murmur could be heard in the crowd. Glaser smiled, suppressed a laugh and then said: “But let’s get to the point.”

It’s probably too early for the players to laugh at this joke. Hockey fans and Oilers fans shouldn’t feel guilty about laughing at a harmless dig.

I’m sure McDavid was laughing as he planned his revenge tour for next season.
