Dan Orlovsky fires back at silly Jordan love story

While discussing the Green Bay Packers on NFL Live last week, Booger McFarland stopped and asked Dan Orlovsky a question.

“Dan, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this… you’re right, Jordan Love took his game to the next level in the second half of last season, so what’s next for him? I think the next theme for him is, regardless of man, zone, regardless of coverage in crunch time, can we win because of you, not the system? Can you go beyond the x’s and o’s and start making plays based on your performance? That’s what the greats do.”

Without hesitation, Orlovsky shot back.

“That’s the thing about this Boog, in this system, the Kyle Shanahan system, I often say the best quarterbacks make the system the star. So if you’re Jordan Love, you’ve got to let Matt LaFleur and the plays and the system continue to make the star and then certainly have those great performances in some moments, but if he focuses it on me and my growth and development, then I think he can get in trouble this year.”

Orlovsky makes clear what people close to the team and within the organization have known for a long time. This team is no longer about the star quarterbacks, and that’s exactly what they want.
The NFL’s most successful offensive football (aside from Patrick Mahomes) is played in cities with young head coaches and modern systems. We’ve known for years that Aaron Rodgers and LaFleur weren’t a good fit. We knew that the moment Rogers was gone, we’d see how LaFleur really wanted things to be. Last year was our first glimpse that they’re on the right track.

So instead of trying to build another Rodgers, the organization is smart enough to allow a partnership between coach, system and quarterback that will take the entire offense to a higher level.
They had a run in Love’s debut season with untested players all over the field that was almost as exciting as during Rodgers’ last run. If Lafluer’s system can shine and Love can grow, they have a good chance to surpass the great Packer teams that failed to win a title.
