Maren Morris says her new song is about her “situation” after the divorce

Maren Morris is in the healing process, and that means she’s turning her back on love – for now. Ahead of the release of her new song “I Hope I Never Fall in Love” on Friday (July 12), the singer-songwriter talked about the inspiration behind her lyrics: She’s exploring a simple “situationship” after divorce.

“The title is self-explanatory as I’ve just gone through a big breakup,” Morris said of the track in an Instagram Reels video posted the day before its release. “I just don’t want to go down that road again, take it easy and really just embrace the ‘situation’ of it all.”

“You can scream the chorus and I can’t wait to sing it live with everyone,” she added.

The song, produced by Evan Blair, comes about 10 months after Morris filed for divorce from fellow songwriter Ryan Hurd, with whom she has 4-year-old son Hayes. In their October 2 divorce filing, Morris’s lawyers said the former couple were “unable to live together successfully as man and wife” and had “irreconcilable differences in their marriage.”

Following the release of “I Hope I Never Fall in Love,” the singer explained the song’s meaning again in an Instagram post, noting that it’s about “the afterglow of a show.” “It’s a bittersweet heartbreak because I’m in self-protection mode but I still want to feel something,” she continued. “Throwing parties, going home with a stranger, popping champagne… whatever we need to do to process our pain, it’s not always a pretty path to healing.”

“I obviously want to fall in love again, but I can’t bring myself to do it right now,” she added. “So here’s a number about this strange but constructive (and destructive) window in my life. Out everywhere now. ❤️‍🩹”

The track will appear on Morris’ upcoming EP Breakwhich is scheduled for August 2. In June, she released another song from the five-track project: “Cut!” featuring Julia Michaels.
