In case you’ve forgotten, McIlroy finished the tournament with two birdies in a row to take the title from Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre. McIlroy’s final approach was a perfectly executed 2-iron stinger to 11 feet, a putt he holed to take a one-stroke lead in the win.

The shot was so good, in fact, that the Renaissance Club in Scotland put a plaque on it. And McIlroy fondly recalled one of the best shots of his career in his press conference on Wednesday. He hadn’t seen the plaque yet, but had seen photos posted online.

“To hit two iron shots like that and make the putts I needed, yeah, that was fantastic,” McIlroy said. “I felt a little bad because it was at Bob’s expense, but at the same time it was incredible to win a tournament I’d never won before. Great memories and great to be back.”

Looking back, the famous shot almost never happened… at least not with a 2-iron.

McIlroy carries a 5-wood most weeks, rather than a 2-iron. But in preparing for last year’s trip to Scotland, McIlroy reached into his stash of spare clubs in his garage and pulled out a 17-degree TaylorMade P760 2-iron. The low-flying iron was designed to replace his higher-flying 5-wood and give him the ability to hit the ball a little deeper and with less spin to cut through the Scottish wind.

Obviously, this decision worked perfectly.
