Dearborn man charged with allegedly covering up death in multiple counties

A Dearborn man was charged Friday with allegedly trying to cover up the death of a Brazilian woman in Washtenaw County.

Dearborn police arrested 57-year-old Fareed George Hajjar on Friday after passersby found a body in a sewer near the 7700 block of Earheart Road in Northfield Township on June 30.

Officials said the body was that of 42-year-old Brazilian citizen Suzan Barbosa-Ferreira, Dearborn police said in a press release on Friday.

Northfield and Dearborn police were able to trace Barbosa-Ferreira’s last known whereabouts to a home in Dearborn, the press release said.

The Washtenaw County District Attorney’s Office charged Hajjar with two counts, including exhumation and mutilation and covering up the death of a person. He was arraigned Friday in Washtenaw District Court 14A-3.

Judge James Cameron set Hajjar’s bail at $2 million, payable in cash or surety, and his next court date is July 25 to hear the charges.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about Barbosa-Ferreira’s death to contact Dearborn police at 313-943-2132 or submit an anonymous tip to CrimeStoppers.

As of Friday, online court records did not list an attorney representing Hajjar.

“We would like to thank the Township of Northfield for their patience as we began this sensitive investigation with our partner agencies while maintaining the integrity of the evidence,” Northfield Township Police Chief Martin Smith said in the release.
