Man charged in far northeast Dallas death told police his gun was fired “accidentally”

A 32-year-old man facing murder charges in connection with the shooting death of a woman in far northeast Dallas told police he “accidentally” fired a gun during an argument with her, according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed by The Dallas Morning News.

At about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, Dallas police officers responded to a call about a shooting in the 11500 block of Plano Road and found a woman who had been shot in a parking lot. The woman, whose identity the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office was still trying to determine Tuesday, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Later that day, police found a sedan at the scene using surveillance footage from two nearby businesses and information from a witness who told authorities he heard two gunshots, an officer wrote in the affidavit.

Police arrested the driver of the limo, Yons Alshabli, at his Lake Highlands apartment complex and later convicted him of murder. He remained in Dallas County custody Friday afternoon, jail records show. It was unclear Friday whether he had an attorney.

Speaking to police, Alshabli initially said the sedan seen at the scene had been stolen from him while he was delivering food for DoorDash earlier in the day. He later changed his statement to “tell the truth” after police confronted him with “potential evidence” incriminating him, the affidavit states.

Alshabli told police he picked up the woman twice in the area, although he did not know her name. After seeing her on Tuesday, he picked her up to take her to a Plano Street motel and pay her $70 for sex, the affidavit states.

During the trip, a pickup truck pulled up behind them while Alshabli was driving. Fearing he was being followed, he decided not to have sex with the woman, he told police. He gave her $10 and told her to get out of the vehicle – a request she refused, according to the affidavit.

Alshabli got out of the sedan, walked around her and opened the passenger door, telling police he “accidentally fired a bullet into the ground.” He then pointed the gun at the woman and ordered her to exit the vehicle, the affidavit states.

Alshabli told police that the woman then grabbed the gun and pulled it toward her. During the scuffle, “a shot was accidentally fired” and hit her in the head, the affidavit states.

Alshabli told police he was scared and left the scene after removing the woman and her belongings from the limousine and dumping her body and belongings in the parking lot. According to the affidavit, the witness saw this action and called 911 after hearing the gunshots.
