Eminem shows daughter Hailie Jade as a child in the emotional “Temporary”

If you plan to listen to Eminem’s new album The death of Slim Shadymake sure you have tissues handy before track 15. On “Temporary,” the 51-year-old rapper presents footage of his daughter Hailie Jade when she was a toddler and promises that he will always be with her even after his death.

The emotional song begins with Em’s monologue: “Many people ask me: Am I afraid of death?”

“The truth is, I think what scares me the most is that I won’t be able to tell you all the things I want to tell you when I’m not here anymore,” he continues in spoken form. “So this song is for Hailie, in case that day comes.”

The track then switches to an old audio clip of the 15-time Grammy winner talking to baby Hailie, now 28. “Where’s Hailie? Where is she?” his younger self asks, before his little daughter adorably screams, “That’s not Hailie, that’s a monster!”

“Hailie Jade, I wrote you this song/ To help you deal with life now that I’m gone,” Em raps today. “How do I start? I just want to say, take care of Alaina, Stevie and Uncle Nate/ And, honey, be strong.”

The Detroit artist is also father to adopted children Alaina, 31, and Stevie, 22, whom he mentions in the previous line; Nate is the rapper’s half-brother, Nathan Mathers. He continues to urge Hailie to carry on after his death – “Don’t you dare shed a tear, what am I telling you?/ ‘Pull yourself together, little soldier'” – between more retro recordings of his daughter’s voice and a rousing chorus from Skylar Grey.

While it might be the most heartbreaking, “Temporary” isn’t the only time Eminem addresses his children on the 19-track album. Death of Slim Shady. On “Somebody Save Me,” which features Jelly Roll, the rapper shows a clip of Alaina talking to him as a little girl and apologizes to all three of his children for missing out on life because of his drug problem. (The rapper celebrated his 16th birthday earlier this year.) And on lead single “Houdini,” the Detroit icon raps, “Fuck my own kids, they’re brats,” while giving Hailie, Alaina and Stevie the middle finger over FaceTime in the video.

It’s also not the first time that Hailie – who married Evan McClintock in May with her famous father by her side – has appeared on one of Eminem’s songs. The hip-hop star also featured her on “97 Bonnie and Clyde” (1999) and “My Dad’s Gone Crazy” (2002), as well as on the “Hailie’s Song” dedicated to her on The Eminem Show to her.
