After years of happily saying “Rock and Stone!” to each other, fans of Deep Rock Galactic can finally sing it too. Italian metal band Wind Rose has collaborated with the DRG team to produce a song named after the iconic catchphrase, along with a wonderfully offbeat music video to go with it.
Dwarf-themed heavy metal seems to be Wind Rose’s bread and butter – their previous singles include Diggy Diggy Hole and Mine Mine Mine!, and their latest album (where you’ll find Rock and Stone) is called Trollslayer (a reference to a caste of dwarves from Warhammer Fantasy). Hey, I respect anyone who has found their niche.
The video sees the band dressed in impressive dwarven garb, singing to an audience of Deep Rock Galactic miners and embarking on their own adventure to dig on Hoxxes IV and fight swarms of Glyphids. The actual song… well, I don’t think it holds a candle to Imagine Dragons, and the chorus feels a bit repetitive, although admittedly that’s not my usual genre. But it’s got loads of infectious enthusiasm and definitely feels in the same spirit as Deep Rock Galactic’s boisterous and relentlessly positive community, so I can’t be too snooty about it.
The game definitely deserves its own anthem – six years after its original Early Access release, DRG is still as popular and beloved as ever, with regular content updates and even a successful spin-off. Developer Ghost Ship Games has even been approached about a TV adaptation – perhaps it’s just found its theme tune?
