Is The Perfect Couple based on a book? New Netflix show explained

Netflix has a good habit of taking established material and turning it into great TV shows, and The Perfect Couple could be the next hit. But what is the series based on?

The streaming service offers a treasure trove of new TV shows every year and has something for everyone – from sci-fi adventures to romantic soap-style dramas.

The Perfect Couple definitely falls into the latter category and could well be the next big TV series to take over your life and binge watch.

With Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Dakota Fanning in the cast, it’s a big deal. Are there any literary inspirations for the project?

The book for the show

“The Perfect Couple” is directly based on the New York Times bestseller of the same name by Elin Hilderbrand.

Billy Howle and Eve Hewson in The Perfect Couple

The original novel was published in 2018 to great success. It is a love story mixed with some gruesome elements from true crime and it revolves around a large luxury wedding.

The Perfect Couple is set in the summer on Nantucket. In the summer. Amelia and Benji are very much in love and are about to get married. But when a body is found floating in the harbor on the morning of their wedding, all the guests come under suspicion.

More from the author

Hilderbrand was named “Queen of Beach Reading” and her career as an author stretches back to the year 2000.

To date, she has written four short stories and 30 novels. Many of her stories are set in Nantucket, a place she first visited in 1993. Beaches are often the setting of her stories, and her works always contain a romantic element.

“The Perfect Couple” was Hilderbrand’s first crime novel and one of her most successful novels to date. It is a standalone story, so there is no follow-up novel and there are probably no sequels planned for the television series either.

Interestingly, more of Hilderbrand’s stories could make it to the screen. Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo has partnered with ABC to adapt the author’s Paradise trilogy into a series.

What does Netflix have in store?

Netflix will release a six-part miniseries on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

The series stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Jack Reynor, Billy Howle and Eve Hewson. Isabelle Adjani also plays a supporting role.

As mentioned above, there will not be a second season of The Perfect Couple because it is a novel written in one piece, unless Netflix is so enamored with the series that they require Hilderbrand to write another one.
