Former Pirate Roynon secures new Championship club

Former Poole Pirates rider Adam Roynon has signed for SGB Championship rivals Oxford Cheetahs.

Roynon began the 2023 season as a substitute at Poole before his stay ended due to injury and he was replaced by Joe Thompson.

During his time with the Pirates, Roynon scored a total of 72+17 points in 71 races and 20 matches, contributing to the BSN series triumph.

The 35-year-old has been without a club since then and has decided not to be available for National League clubs this season.

Instead, Roynon has increased his work as a presenter this year, but must now resume his racing duties.

The Cumbrian team were snapped up by the Oxford Cheetahs, who beat the Pirates in a super race after a 45-45 draw at Cowley on Wednesday night.

Roynon replaces the injured Henry Atkins for 28 days, who broke a finger in a game against Poole earlier this season.

“Adam meets all the requirements and we know that he can do the job for the Cheetahs,” said team boss Peter Schroeck.

“It was difficult to find suitable guests for Henry and our thanks go to Jacob Hook who did a great job at the numerous meetings he attended for us.

“With Henry out for a while, we needed to do something to ensure we maintained our claim to the Cab Direct Championship play-offs. To do this, we brought in Adam for an initial 28 days.”

Roynon will make his Oxford debut tonight against Redcar.
