The Strad – Documentary: Second World War violin restored for non-profit music project

A violin donated to the Belgian non-profit organization Music Fund has a fascinating story. The donor’s father was violinist Lucien Bossy, who served in the Belgian army during World War II and spent five years as a prisoner of war. He played the violin every night to keep up the morale of his fellow prisoners.

The violin has now been restored by guitar maker Shehada Shalalda and, like all instruments donated to the Music Fund, will be donated to one of the many music projects it supports around the world.

American collector David L. Fulton assembled one of the most important collections of string instruments of the 20th century. This year’s calendar celebrates some of these priceless treasures, including Yehudi Menuhin’s famous “Lord Wilton” Guarneri, the Carlo Bergonzi once played by Fritz Kreisler, and four instruments by Antonio Stradivari.
