Maren Morris releases the song “I Hope I Never Fall in Love” on the Intermission EP

Maren Morris is back with another new song: “I Hope I Never Fall in Love” from her upcoming EP Break.

The song is anchored by a slowed-down version of the classic drum beat from the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby,” but – as the song’s title suggests – Morris is more interested in stepping on love fantasies than embracing them. “Ooh, I’m a woman of her word/Love, you only did me dirty,” Morris sings in the bridge, as the song builds to an exhilarating climax: “Forever was a damn lie, so goodbye/You only made it worse/I hope I never fall in love.”

In a statement, Morris described “I Hope I Never Fall in Love” as the “afterglow of a shitshow” (Morris and her ex-husband Ryan Hurd filed for divorce last October). She continued, “It’s a bittersweet heartbreak because I’m in self-protection mode, but I still want to feel something. Throwing parties, going home with a stranger, popping champagne, whatever we need to do to process our trauma is not a pretty path to healing. I obviously want to fall in love again, but I can’t put my heart through it yet, so here’s a number about this strange but constructive (and destructive) window into my life.”
