Extreme heat poses challenges for Florida’s school bands and club sports

The big story: For Florida’s high school bands, summer rehearsals have always been tough in preparation for the fall season.

The same goes for young people who play club and league sports while they wait for their school teams to resume training.

Board elections: A number of candidates are trying to “flip” the majority on the Pinellas County School Board, but others are concerned about what that could mean for the district.

Book recommendations: The Florida Department of Education recommended the 1813 British novel “Pride and Prejudice” in an effort to “instill a sense of American pride in students,” Florida Politics reports.

Lack of consultants: The Hernando County School District is offering scholarships to qualified employees who are willing to complete a three-year university program in counseling and then stay with the district for five years, Bay News Nine reports.

Insurance: Conflicting court rulings over whether insurance carriers can sue school districts in Florida to recover compensation for students injured in bus accidents could force lawmakers to revise the state’s personal injury protection law, Insurance Journal reports.

ZERO: The Escambia County School Board expressed concerns that incomplete state regulations governing student-athletes’ use of name and image likeness agreements could cause problems for students, families and schools, WEAR reports.

Address to parents: The Seminole County School District is sending staff into communities on its Student Success Express bus with information about courses, services and other district activities, WMFE reports.

School closings: Madison County School Superintendent Shirley Joseph is recommending that the district close three elementary schools with fewer than 250 students and consolidate grade levels to other locations, the Madison County Carrier reports.

School management: Seven schools in Lee County are getting new principals, the Fort Myers News-Press reports. • Nine schools in Collier County are getting new principals, the Naples Daily News reports. • The new principal at Canopy Oaks Elementary in Leon County is planning a different approach to teaching and learning in the fall, WTXL reports.

Supervisors: As the Bradenton Herald reported, the Manatee County School Board gave Superintendent Jason Wysong rave reviews after his first year in office.

Road safety: Port Orange City Council is taking additional safety measures, such as placing prominent warning signs around schools within city limits, after a student died in an accident outside an elementary school, WKMG reports.

From the court register… A federal judge has rejected a lawsuit by teachers challenging Florida’s law restricting the use of personal pronouns and titles, News Service of Florida reports. Judge Mark Walker ruled that the plaintiffs made a plausible argument that the law violates protections against employment discrimination. • A Jackson County mother is suing the school district, alleging that her 6-year-old daughter was sexually abused by another student, WMBB reports.
