Meta is testing additional artificial intelligence features for its instant messaging platform WhatsApp. The US social media giant is reportedly testing a Google Pixel-like voice transcription feature for voice messages.

According to WABetaInfo, an online messaging platform that tracks WhatsApp updates, the instant messaging platform has started testing a new feature that will allow users to view a text transcription of a voice message sent to them. The report says that the Meta-owned instant messaging platform has rolled out this new feature to a select number of Android users in some regions.

The report says that once the feature is available, users will be able to enable transcriptions for both incoming and outgoing audio notes – additional packages for preferred languages may be required. The feature, which is currently in beta testing, allows creating transcriptions in English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Hindi, but support for more languages is expected to be available with the final release. The report also says that based on the languages available, the feature is likely to roll out in select regions first, which will likely include India.

The feature will reportedly notify users when it is available with a message stating that the feature is end-to-end encrypted. The report also states that the feature will generate text transcription of audio notes for increased privacy by processing it on the device.

Google offers similar features in its Messages app, but these are limited to certain Pixel devices. Since WhatsApp is testing transcriptions for audio notes, the feature is expected to be available more widely and on more Android smartphones in the future. There is currently no information about the feature in the iOS app for WhatsApp.

Recently, Samsung also confirmed that it will extend the Galaxy AI-powered Live Translate feature to third-party dialers on select Samsung smartphones. Samsung has confirmed that the feature, which offers real-time translations of phone calls, will also be available on third-party app dialers, but has not named any specific apps. However, WhatsApp is expected to be among the first apps to feature Samsung’s AI feature.
