NAWILIWILI — Bonnie Tiffany, at the big helm of Bonjolea II, may have been the first to hear the finish siren during the opening race of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Wahine Series in Nawiliwili Harbor on Thursday, June 13.
“But the Sydney 36 owes the smaller Olson 30s a 36-second per mile handicap,” said Chris Jordan of OZone, one of the Olson 30s. “So after the handicap was applied, OZone took first place by 47 seconds with Alison Fornari steering the boat.”
Bonjolea II sounded the finish horn in a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes and 29 seconds after completing the three lap 6-mile course in a wind of 14 knots from the north-northeast.
She corrected to 1:06:15, 47 seconds slower than OZone, which recorded a total time of 1:05.22 and corrected to 1:05:28.
“Fast Company with Victoria Aiu at the helm seemed to have the best start at the pin end on starboard, although all boats were a little late. Ozone was just to leeward of Fast Company and Bonjolea II came along the line on port tack and quickly tacked to starboard under the other boats,” said Jordan.
“As Bonjolea II tacked back towards the breakwater, they had to give way to OZone and Fast Company. But when the fast Bonjolea II tacked back to starboard near the breakwater, the other boats had to give way to her and she took the lead.”
Bonjolea II rounded the Ninini Buoy in the lead, followed by OZone, Fast Company and Speedy.
“With a spinnaker downwind, OZone tried to ride the wake of Bonjolea II to keep up,” said Jordan.
“At the port entrance, Ozone pulled back his spinnaker pole and went very low, straight to the G-11 buoy, a shorter distance. Bonjolea II is a boat that likes to go far, and they first climbed higher and then jibed back. In doing so, they had to dip Ozone’s stern.”
Ozone was the first to round the G-11 buoy, followed by Bonjolea II, Fast Company and Speedy.
The order did not change until the finish: Fast Company secured third place with a time of 1:12:35 and Speedy with Kristina Chapman at the wheel rounded off the field with a time of 1:14:44.
