Original voice actress Auli’i Cravalho returns to Disney for “Vaiana 2”

It’s time to think again about the coconut.

The border between sky and sea calls… again.

Auli’i Cravalho, the actress who voiced the titular Polynesian princess in the 2016 film The Last Man Vaiana – The wonderful world of loveconfirmed in an Instagram post that she will return for the upcoming animated sequel. A Disney spokesperson also confirmed the news to EW.

In the video for Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” Cravalho excitedly jumps out of the iconic wizard’s hat fantasy that adorns Disney’s animation studios in Burbank, California, and tucked a tropical flower behind her ear. “That feeling when you officially return to Motonui,” the actress wrote in the video’s text. “We’re sailing WAY beyond the reef this November…” she wrote in the caption.

The animated sequel was surprisingly announced last month, with no cast announced. Cravalho will not sing any new tunes by original composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, as the film’s new soundtrack will be composed by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, who won a Grammy for their work. The official logline of the film reads: “The epic animated musical from Walt Disney Animation Studios Vaiana 2 – The Great Adventure takes audiences on an expansive new journey with Moana, Maui, and an all-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected calling from her pioneering ancestors, Moana must journey to the distant seas of Oceania and dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure like she’s never experienced before.”

Disney CEO Bob Iger explained that the film was “originally developed as a series” for Disney+, “but we were impressed with what we saw and felt it deserved a theatrical release.” Iger also reiterated that the live-action adaptation of Vaiana – The wonderful world of love with the original voice actor Dwayne Johnson in the lead role is still in development.

Vaiana 2 – The Great Adventure will be released in theaters on November 27, 2024.
