Fauci’s book stands out because its author chose to place the abusive and ignorant treatment he has received from disinformation fraudsters inside and outside the government since the Trump years in the context of his long career as a public servant.

The problem began with Trump, who was privately polite to Fauci and even seemed to accept his truthfulness about the severity of the developing crisis – but at public rallies he dismissed COVID as a “hoax” by the Democrats.

Fauci is circumspect about many government officials he worked with as a member of Trump’s COVID task force, including Vice President Mike Pence, who Fauci said appeared to be genuinely confronting the crisis but was hampered by his zealous loyalty to Trump. But he is disdainful of those who exploited the public’s unfamiliarity with the scientific method to sow doubt about necessary countermeasures to the pandemic and tout useless panaceas.
