If there’s one thing that unites Cougars around the world, it’s our great love for this creamy, golden treasure that’s considered the heavyweight champion of college sports cheese (those who know, know). Whether you’re a diehard fan or a cheese connoisseur looking for the next big thing, this ranking of my personal favorite varieties of Cougar Gold cheese is your holy grail of Palouse-made deliciousness. So buckle up, cheese lovers, because things are about to get really exciting! (I know, I’m sorry. The opportunity was right there).

Disclaimer: This ranking does not include the Cougar Gold Crimson Fire or Hot Pepper cheeses as I have never tried them. For my personal taste, my cheese doesn’t necessarily need to be spicy, but let me know if I miss anything. And now for the good stuff!

4. Vikings

Let’s start with the smoother, milder member of the Cougar Gold cheese family, the Natural Viking. This cheese is delicious on almost anything and serves as the perfect blank canvas to be combined with other ingredients and flavors. It’s straightforward, simple, and delicious – it will never let you down. We all need a Viking cheese in our lives.

Viking Cheese is perfect for: Macaroni and cheese (1,000/10, no comments).

3. Sweet basil

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE basil. And I mean, I LOVE basil. This cheese will take you on a trip straight to Italy with its fresh herb flavor mixed with all the gourmet qualities of classic Viking cheese. If you’re into delicious Italian flair, this cheese is a must-try for you.

Sweet Basil Cheese is perfect for: Tomato Basil Cougar Gold Bruschetta (or Grilled Cheese). Like HELLO?!! A need.

2. Dill-garlic

Oh, look, more herbs I love – dill and garlic. There’s no other way to say it than this cheese is ADDICTIVE. The dill and garlic flavor adds a little something extra to the classic Cougar Gold base that’s simply irresistible and pairs well with many great recipes. This bad boy is perfect for your charcuterie board and is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser no matter what you serve it with.

Dill Garlic Cheese is perfect for: Charcuterie platters or Dill Garlic Cougar Gold Cheesecakes (I’ve never had those before, but suddenly I need them ASAP).

Ahh, who’s surprised?! I just couldn’t help but put the OG deliciousness we all know and love in the top spot. Since I first tried Cougar Gold (when it was served at my high school graduation party after I’d just announced my enrollment at WSU), this beautiful canned cheese has remained unmatched in its glory. You really can’t go wrong. And it’s a million times better than any other college town cheese. Agriculture school beef, baby.

Cougar Gold Cheese is perfect for: Everything.
