“When Disney asked us if we wanted to be part of this project, it was a bit overwhelming because there are so many great Disney songs. But it became clear pretty quickly that The Lion King songbook, and especially ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ stood out from the rest,” says Simple Plan Billboard. “The song just has such a classic feel and the melodies are so catchy and timeless. We also felt that it would fit our style really well and would sound amazing as a pop-punk version.

“It’s also one of those songs and films that have been such an important part of people’s lives. Many of our fans grew up watching the song and listening to the soundtrack, and we’ve played it to our own children as well,” the band continues. “So it holds a special place in our hearts and we felt like it was a rare song that could speak to a very broad audience across many generations. And finally, the fact that the film celebrates its 30th anniversary this year was just the icing on the cake! It’s a huge honour to offer our own version of this song and to cover such an iconic artist as Sir Elton John. We’re not sure if he’s heard the song or not, but we hope he enjoys this new version and feels like we’ve done it justice.”

The band will perform the song at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event on August 9.

According to a press release, the collection will feature a range of alternative, rock and pop-punk bands reinterpreting popular Disney songs, as well as a fresh, street-ready look for Mickey and friends, with Goofy and Donald Duck slipping into sneakers, skinny jeans and backwards baseball caps to celebrate.

Guitarist Jeff Stinco drew attention to the collaboration earlier this week when the band released a video in which he took part in a Disney quiz in which he was asked to choose his favorite animated film about the Mouse House. The shredder repeatedly chose The Lion King about classics like Toy history, Ratatouille, Lilo & Stitch And Tarzan.

“Why do you always choose Lion King?” a voice off-screen asked Stinco as he stood in the shadow of Cinderella’s castle. Stinco shrugged silently and smiled, although the post’s caption made sense when the news was revealed. “Jeff really has the love for The Lion King lately,” it said. “There has to be a reason (chin stroking and sly eyes emoji).”

On Wednesday (July 10), Disney Music revealed a sneak peek of the song “Simple Plan,” which featured Goofy and Donald rocking out with Mickey under a banner that read “A Whole New Sound.”
