Russia: US missiles in Germany signal Cold War

Moscow:

The US plan to temporarily station long-range missiles in Germany will lead to a Cold War-style confrontation between Russia and the West, the Kremlin said on Thursday.

The White House announced the decision on Wednesday during a NATO summit in Washington, arguing that the stationing of long-range weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, in Europe would have a deterrent effect.

“We are taking steady steps towards the Cold War,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a state television reporter.

“All the features of the Cold War with direct confrontation are returning,” he said.

He added that Washington’s decision gave Russia “a reason to stick together” and achieve “all the objectives” of its military operation in Ukraine.

Following the Russian offensive against Ukraine in 2022, NATO countries led by the United States have strengthened their defenses in Europe.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed the planned stationing of US weapons in his country and called it a “necessary and important decision at the right time”.
