Book Talk and Book Signing – Vin Scully Day with SB Foresters

Book Talk and Book Signing – Vin Scully Day with SB Foresters

The Santa Barbara Foresters, 10-time National Baseball Congress World Series champions, will honor the legacy of Los Angeles Dodgers Hall of Fame commentator Vin Scully with a special panel discussion, audience question-and-answer session and book signing before the team faces the OC Riptide at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Santa Barbara High School’s Eddie Matthews Field.

The Vin Scully Day event featuring the Foresters will begin at 3:30 p.m. with an introduction to the book “Perfect Eloquence: An Appreciation of Vin Scully,” recently published by longtime Southern California sportswriter Tom Hoffarth and published by the University of Nebraska Press. The book features 67 essays from a variety of people whose lives were impacted by the legacy of Scully, who retired in 2016 after 67 seasons with the team and died in August 2022 at age 94.

The Tecolote Book Shop in Santa Barbara is available to anyone who would like to purchase a copy of “Perfect Eloquence.”

Hoffarth will participate in a conversation with several of the book’s contributors, and the panel will include special guest Ron Shelton, the renowned Hollywood screenwriter, director and producer — and native Santa Barbaran. Shelton recently wrote his own book, “The Church of Baseball: The Making of ‘Bull Durham.'”

Those who contributed essays to “Perfect Eloquence” and are scheduled to appear include Santa Barbara native Paul Vercammen, known for his longtime CNN reporter and currently director of communications for one of the world’s most decorated and effective relief organizations, Santa Barbara-based ShelterBox USA; Santa Barbara native Tom Leykis, an iconic radio host; and Jeff Proctor, a veteran television producer of live sporting events in Southern California and across the United States who has worked on the Scully shows.

Since the Foresters’ inception in 1991, the team has never had a losing season and has produced many future Major League Baseball players. Its story has been chronicled in a new book by Jim Buckley called “‘Ster It Up! The Story of America’s Most Successful Summer Baseball Team,” available at all Forester games, as well as online and at local bookstores.

Head coach Bill Pintard’s Foresters entered the California Collegiate League this week with a record of 17-7. The 2024 roster includes college players from across the country – Ohio State, BYU, Texas A&M, Northwestern, Texas, Rice, TCU, Texas Tech, Cal Berkeley, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Auburn and Ole Miss – as well as locals from UCSB, UCLA, Long Beach State and Westmont College.

Tickets for Foresters games are $7 for adults and $3 for children.
