Michigan mother and son released from hospital after car accident

A Michigan mother and her son have been released from the hospital after a devastating car crash left two other members of their family dead and a third member seriously injured.

On Wednesday, July 10, Chelsea and Levi Savage were released ten days after they were injured in the car crash that resulted in the deaths of Dan and Mason Savage, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up for the family.

Dan, 38, was traveling with his family – his wife Chelsea and three sons Mason, Parker and Levi – when the incident occurred in Fillmore Township on the afternoon of June 30, NBC affiliate WOOD-TV reported.

Dan died at the scene, while Chelsea and her three boys were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Mason, 14, and Parker, 10, suffered head injuries, while Levi, 9, and Chelsea suffered less serious injuries.

Mason, whose prognosis was initially described as “poor,” suffered irreversible brain damage and was placed on life support.

On July 6, Chelsea made the decision to donate Mason’s organs, saving at least four lives, according to GoFundMe organizer Joe Josten.

Parker, who turns 11 on Monday, July 15, remains in intensive care, “but continues to show a little improvement each day,” Josten wrote in a July 10 update.

The family was on their way for a dune buggy ride when the incident occurred at the intersection of 136th Avenue and 58th Street, about 30 miles southwest of Grand Rapids in Allegan County, CBS affiliate WWMT-TV reported at the time.

According to the source, a preliminary investigation by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Dan, who was driving westbound, failed to stop at a stop sign. The family’s sedan was struck by a pickup truck, whose driver was not injured in the collision.

Tina Josten, the boys’ great aunt, told WOOD-TV the family was “shocked” to hear Dan did not stop because he works as a driving instructor.

“He is the one who conducts the driving tests for the driver’s license exams. So he is a very good and very careful driver,” she said.

Tina Josten added that Dan “loved (his family) so much.”

As of Thursday, July 11, the GoFundMe campaign for the Savage family has raised nearly $50,000. PEOPLE has reached out to fundraiser organizer Joe Josten for comment.
